I have read the story so many times. I knew the facts. But this time? It hit different. I felt it deep within my bones. This woman (Matthew 9:18-26) had been bleeding for TWELVE YEARS. Twelve years. Think back to where you were twelve years ago and leading up to today—that entire time, imagine that you had been bleeding and in pain.
Your normal day is happening before you until you hear JESUS is in town. He’s walking the streets of the community and healing people all around. You ask where He is and despite your current state, you make it your mission to just touch Him.
Just the hem of His robe…the frayed edges of His garment was all she needed.
Jesus, who went from being rejected to high in demand when the townspeople began to see that He was in fact who He says He is, was already on His way to Jairus’s daughter.
This woman, who comes up behind him, stretchesssssss her hand out and just touches it.
Can you imagine? Filled with hope despite the absolute desperation and longevity of her circumstances?
As He is walking, the Savior HEARS HER THOUGHT and turns around to respond to her.
“‘Daughter, be encouraged! Your faith has made you well.’ And the woman was healed at that moment.” (Matthew 9:22).
What does Jesus do?
1.) He reminds her that He is always listening to the yearnings of her soul. He knows her.
2.) He reclaims her identity as the woman who had been bleeding for 12 years to “Daughter.” With it, authority, power, and belonging in a moment.
3.) A miracle happens. Her entire life changes in a moment.
I pray I have that kind of faith…the kind that doesn’t let bitterness take root because it believes that He can heal and will heal, and when He does, it will be the right time. Her faith made no sense and praise God it didn’t.
He is the healer…working beneath the surface, on a Heavenly timeline, and fully aware of what you need.
The hem of His robe. That was all it took.
