At first, his wheels kept getting stuck on the speed bump.
He was intrigued by how it looked different than the normal pavement but was confused on how he was supposed to get over it and not go around it.
A little frustrated, he rocked back and forth and maneuvered his walker trying to figure it out.
I realized he wasn’t trying to avoid the obstacles; he was just asking for help as to how to navigate them. His desire to get over them wasn’t helping him slow down enough to know when to give the “umph” to get over them.
Sometimes, we want to get to the other side so bad, we don’t slow down our pace to gain perspective of how to get there.
Noted, right?
“Sleddy, when mama says, “3”, use all your energy and push towards me!…1…2…3!”, I practically shouted.
His wheels barreled over the top of the speed bump and he came RUNNIN’!!!!
With a smile the size of Texas, he bee-lined past me and did a U-turn to come back and do it again.
And again and again and again.
The fall crisp air hitting both our faces and the victory he felt going back and forth, I felt Heaven smile.
“I'm so glad I didn’t rush him in the car,” I thought.
You see, he was always capable of getting over the hurdles; he just had to shift where he was applying his power.
Once he changed his approach and placed his strength in the right place, momentum carried him and power pushed him forward.
Once again, note to self 📝
Perhaps we could get excited about the speed bumps on our journey today if we changed our approach?
If we placed our strength in the sweet spot of what we control and where we know God’s power is made perfect in us…where we show up, full-steam and give all our effort, trusting that he will push us to the other side.
Maybe speed bumps in the middle of the parking lot weren’t the best way to remind Sledge + myself that we were made to overcome obstacles, but ya know what? It’s true.
Shift your energy. Turn your wheels. Lift your head. Give all that you can where you are and let the momentum of Jesus carry you forward.
