It is the question you were made to ask—the one that swirls around in your mind as you turn the pages of your planner, whispers to your heart as you have conversations with friends about their lives and their doings, and yells, somewhat assaultingly, at every birthday that passes—what are you making of this life?
Are you living a meaningful one?
Especially this time of year, as the assessments roll around and the evaluations take root, you find the wheel of your mind begin to turn like a bad wireless signal that won’t connect…turning and turning and turning…
“God, am I missing it? How do I not miss it?”
The time passes and you learn over and over again, you can’t white-knuckle something you never fully held anyway. You can only open your hands, feel it pass through, appreciate all it gives and takes away, and pray to keep experiencing its grace.
The hard part about life is once you have the revelation of how much is meaningless compared to what is truly meaningful, thanks to the teachers like tragedy and pain and books like Ecclesiastes, you can’t fathom forgetting that truth.
Until you do.
Another sunrise, another scroll, and somehow you’re hitting the pavement, chasing after something else to fill your blistered hands so that you can have control of it.
You want control!
You want to know what’s ahead!
Right?
Well, you think you do at least.
You think you want the shiny, trendy, shimmering thing you saw in the distance until you realize you took you with it.
And your restless soul came along for the ride.
And you find yourself, in that quiet place, asking God again, “Hi…it’s me…I guess this wasn’t it. Can You help me not keep missing it?”
MERCY.
How thick and wide and all-encompassing it remains.
You don’t want fear to drive you but there is a healthy fear that eternity is wired in you—the one that knows the ONLY way to live a meaningful life is to SURRENDER it.
To hear your wants taunt you from the sideline as you decide to press onward on the narrow way.
And others that submit, remember His timeline, and remember only He knows best.
The spirit knows all too well the power of the flesh but what it also knows is this- The Holy Spirit is greater still 🤍
