It feels daunting…to be the one to go first when you aren’t sure if it’s going to be reciprocated or how it’s going to be received.
Sometimes, it simply feels unfair. Why does it have to be you?
Or maybe you’ve already written the narrative to what will happen when you do go first—maybe it’s that they will reject you, the conversation will not go well, or that they will hurt you again.
But the truth is—even if they do, you were designed to go first.
To be the one willing to remain soft, even when the circumstances want to make you hard.
To be the one seeking out community, even when it feels frustrating or lonely like everyone already has a group and somehow you missed the memo.
To be the one to unzip your heart and share where you’re truly at, knowing that vulnerability is courage and your weakness is His strength.
To be the one to initiate conversations that tap into the soul and don’t remain at surface level, even when it hasn’t been the norm or feels weird…everyone is yearning for intimate connection.
To be the one to speak to someone else’s strengths and see the Jesus in them, even when you don’t feel like they voice it in you.
As you show up and serve, forgive, or lead in the way of Jesus, you will discover that you are actually not the first. Your greatest friend has already gone before you, shining the light on the narrow path, protecting you from harm, and whispering, “Even if it looks different than you think, I will help you. Come. Go first.”
Pride crucified.
Eyes opened.
Assumptions released.
Mind renewed.
Will surrendered.
Heart devoted.
I imagine the conversation goes a little like this,
“Jesus, If I go, you promise that it’ll be worth it?”
His response?
“I promise I’ll be with you. And that? That is always worth it.”
